Easy Gluten Free Sausage Balls
a crowd pleaser
Not going to lie, but I had never had a sausage ball until I married my husband. My mother in law makes really delicious sausage balls with Bisquick. It’s one of those “no recipe” recipes on feels. I was in my dairy free era (thank goodness that has finally passed!!) and she would make me some with gluten free Bisquick and almond milk.
I finally decided to give it a try to make my own with a “cleaner” homemade Bisquick. It’s quite simple to make yourself. I’ve had these dairy free and they are good, but the cheese is truly what makes them excellent. I took these to a Christmas party where people didn’t know they were gluten free and I was sad that I didn’t have any leftovers.
We love making these for a quick bulk freezer prep option. They are so easy to make a lot of and freeze.
**Makes two sheets of sausage balls so plan on baking for 40 min total. Around 10 minutes of prep time.
Ingredients:
2 cups Bobs red mill 1:1 gluten free flour
1.5 tbl baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbl cold butter cut in
2 lb breakfast sausage
8oz block of shredded cheese (raw jack or cheddar)
1/4-1/3 cup milk (or more!)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Make your “bisquick” by whisking the dry ingredients together and then cut in the cold butter with a fork until incorporated.
Break up sausage and add to the “bisquick” mix with the shredded cheese. Start mixing together with your hands and add 1/4 cup of milk. You may need more milk to get everything incorporated together just add as much as needed for all the ingredients to stick together.
Bake at 350 F for 20 min.
Storing:
These taste best fresh because they have their crispy texture. They will keep in a sealed container in the fridge for a few days or alternately freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet and transfer to a freezer storage bag.
You can reheat them in the microwave or preferably an air fryer to get the crispy texture back!
